Sometimes Dreams DO come true….but not today

She went to the concert by herself.  She was too embarrassed to ask any of her girlfriends to go with her.  They would think she was crazy  ier.  She couldn’t explain her obsession, even to herself.  She was too old.  Wasn’t his type.  She told herself every excuse in the book.  But every night she dreamt about him.  Every day she watched his face, as she listened to his voice online.  All 17″ of him.  She wasn’t prepared, however, for the physical impact of seeing him in person….  She had saved up for a good seat and felt like she was staring right up at him.  Goose bumps ran up and down her spine, and she felt light-headed, like she would faint.  Her heart froze up and she forgot to breathe….and then he seemed to smile right down at her as he sang “I get you through it nice and slow, when the world’s spinning out of control”…. Pretty soon she couldn’t tell the reality from the dream.  Things started to get a bit hazy after the concert….

She found herself standing backstage, along with the usual groupies.  Someone asked her something, and she stuttered, “I’m with the band”.  They smiled knowingly, and walked on by. The band was winding down, having a few drinks.  Billy, his buddy and guitarist, handed her a glass.  She took a sip, and grimaced.  Then she heard the voice.  His voice.

“I’m drinking the brown liquor tonight, my friend”, he said.  “If that doesn’t suit you, I’m sure I could find some white lightning”, as he grinned, showing his boyish cockeyed toothy smile that melted hearts.  She looked up, and then around, wondering.  Is he talking to HER?  He clinked his glass to hers.  She could not move.  She was mesmerized.  His brown eyes crinkled at her, as he leaned his long, lanky frame on the doorway.  He put his free hand up on the other side, trapping her in between.

“What’s your story, sunshine, haven’t seen you around here before”, he said.  She lost her words, and downed the contents of her glass, hoping for some liquid courage.  She came up almost choking on the taste, but managed to hold it down.  As it burned fire in her belly, she could finally speak.  She leaned forward, and put her hand on his vest.  “I came here for you”, she said.

“Couple more of these”, he said as he tipped his glass full of brown liquor to her, “and you might just get your wish little lady”.

He whispered in her ear, “You’re like an angel, got me feeling like a devil, and I wanna give you something, if you promise that you won’t tell“.  He pulled a piece of black licorice out of his pocket, and dangled it in front of her.  “My favorite vice”, he said “besides coffee.”   “Goes good with the whiskey”, he breathed in my face.  She leaned forward and they took a bite together.  He smelled deliciously of well-earned sweat, whiskey, licorice and a faint lingering scent of cologne.  She inhaled deeply, to imprint his pheromones in her senses forever.

He pushed his hat back a bit with the glass in his hand.  She raised her eyes and said teasingly “Always with the hat?”  Leaning back against the door frame he said “That’s an excellent question, darlin’, an excellent question.  I’ve always worn a hat, since Little League, and now, I guess I think it adds to the mystery.  Does he or doesn’t he have hair, now that is the real question.”  “I know you have hair”, she said, “I’ve seen pictures without”.   “Now see you’ve gone and spoiled my mystique.  That’s all I’ve got going on”, he grinned.  “Oh, you’ve got a lot more than a hat going on”, she said.

“Maybe we should explore that”, he said, while pouring some more of the brown liquor.  “You’ll be my vacation away from this place. You know what I want.  Holding that cup, It’s pouring over the sides.  Make me wanna spread my arms and fly.

She reached for his hand.  He wrapped his fingers around hers, and looking back said “Billy, I’m leaving you for tonight, take care of the tour bus.”  “Soon enough I’m taking my shot”.  He cocked his fingers like a gun.  “Bang”.

They walked to the parking lot towards her car, away from the horde of fans waiting for him at the tour bus.  She said “You shouldn’t leave your fans disappointed”.  “Not to worry” he said.  “Most of them are happy enough with Pretty Boy Billy”.  As they drove towards her house, she glanced over at him.  “Well I would imagine you have all kinds of girlfriends everywhere”, trying to sound nonchalant about the images playing in her head.  He stared at her a moment.  “Well”, he said, “Let me be perfectly honest”.  “So before this goes too far, let me tell you what you are.  You’re amazing, I’m attracted, but I’m terribly distracted.  And I’m trying to be verbal, and I’m back into this circle because I just found someone special.  And that’s really something special if you knew me.  Nice to meet you, nice to meet you, nice to meet you anyway.  And even if you want me to stay here, I’m telling you right now I should leave before I get to changing my mind, dear. I hope you understand what I mean.”

She stopped the car in her driveway, and froze with her hands on the wheel.  She should turn around and take him back to his bus.  She wasn’t going to make herself a one-night stand, a moment of weakness, a mistake, just another cheap groupie looking for someone to brag about.   But he was honest with her, and she appreciated him all the more for it.  He placed his hand on hers.  She turned her head, looked deep into his eyes.  Satisfied, she took the keys out of the ignition, and opened her car door, walking up to the house without looking back…..

He followed her to the front door.  Put his hands on her shoulders, and turned her around.  He touched his forehead to hers.  “Darlin’, I think you understand me.  That I don’t want to be anything other than what I’ve been trying to be lately.  All I have to do is think of me and I have peace of mind.  I’m tired of looking ’round rooms wondering what I’ve got to do or who I’m supposed to be.  I don’t want to be anything other than me.”  “You are all I want, all I dream about”, she said.  The door closed silently behind them.

She awoke slowly, not wanting her dream to end.  She kept her eyes shut, trying to prolong it.  She knew it was just a dream, but it all felt so real….she sighed as she rolled over to the other side of the bed.  And felt the warmth of a recently departed body.  Her eyes flew open, as she frantically searched her brain and the room for any clues.  Surely it was all a dream.  The best dream.   She blinked as she saw a t-shirt laid across her nightstand.  She grabbed it and held it close to her breast and inhaled of it deeply.   A note fluttered to the floor:

“I’m in love with a girl who knows me better.  Fell for the woman just when I met her. Took my sweet time when I was bitter.  Someone understands.  And she knows how to treat a fella right.  Give me that feeling every night.  Wants to make love when I wanna fight.  Now someone understand me.  I’m in love with a girl, I’m in love with a girl, in love with a girl.  And her name is YOU.”

She rolled back on her back.  How could this be happening to her?  Surely she would never see him again.  Then her phone chirped.  Incoming voice mail, from a number she didn’t recognize.  With her heart pounding, she pressed the button, and heard his voice again…

“Oh, this is the start of something  good, don’t  you agree?  I haven’t felt like this in so many moons, you  know what I mean?  And we can build through this destruction as we are standing on our feet.  So since you want to be with me, you’ll have to follow through with every word you say.  And I, all I really want is you, you to stick around.  I’ll see you everyday.  But you have  to follow through.  You have to  follow through”.

She clutched the phone to her and wept with joy.  Oh yes.  Hell yes.  She would follow through.  She would follow him to the ends of the earth.  Then, startled out of her revelry, she looked at her ringing phone.  It was the same number, calling.  She smiled as she hit the green button….

Throwback Thursday!

tbtgavinThe year was 2011.  The tour included Maroon 5, Train, and GAVIN DEGRAW.

I don’t think any of these bands were on my radar back in 2011, not really.  But now, they are 3 of my most favorite bands.  And all 3 toured together!  Gaaaaa!

I was not really into listening to “favorite bands” in my later years.  Sure, as a kid, The Beatles or The Monkees were spinning on my record player every night.  (Yes, I am THAT old!).  And in the 70’s when line dancing started, I was all in!  I loved to dance!  So I was at the clubs a lot, dancing to great music.

But once I started my career, who had time for music and dancing?  I worked anywhere from 60-90 hours a week, depending on where we were in the accounting cycle.  I didn’t have time to SLEEP, let alone worry about bands.

Then American Idol came along, and changed everything for me.  I started to really enjoy music and singing again.  More and more shows popped up, and I for one liked them all.

I was always a fan of Dancing With the Stars (DWTS).  And lo and behold, a few years ago, a singer/songwriter/piano man named Gavin DeGraw appeared.  I had NO idea who he was, so I googled him.  Wow.  He blew me away.  Such talent, and what a voice!  His dancing skills didn’t last too long on the show, but a new fan was born, in fact, thousands of them!  His twitter account blew up, and his followers are now almost 400K.  I started a special twitter account just to follow him on the show, and HE WAS MY FIRST FOLLOWER!  So that’s MY claim to fame, lol.

I always loved Adam Levine, especially when The Voice started, and loved his performance on American Horror Story (hubba hubba!)  Same with Pat from Train, love those dark haired men!

So I can’t believe that I was a day late and a dollar short of going to see all 3 of my fav bands in one place!  Something like that will never happen again, because they are all their own headlining bands.  All 3 bands have done very well over the past few years, and I love all their songs.  Gavin DeGraw is still my fav (really? lol), but I love all their music.

Was anybody out there lucky enough to have seen one of those concerts?

Baby it’s cold outside

dean

Yes, indeed it is, below zero here in the frosty Midwest!

But aside from that, it’s one of my favorite Christmas songs (especially the Gavin DeGraw/Colbie Caillat duet!).  But does it bother anyone else that this song was written back in the day when the specter of a single woman spending the night with an obvious romantic bachelor would cause a huge scandal??

They even refer to the scandalous nature several times in the lyrics:

My mother will start to worry,

My father will be pacing the floor,

My sister will be suspicious,

My brother will be there at the door,

My maiden aunt’s mind is vicious,

More and more begging, then:

Hey what’s in this drink?

There’s bound to be talk tomorrow,

At least there will be plenty implied.

And then the grand finale, which just slays me:

She says:  I really can’t stay

He says:  Get over that hold out

Seriously??  Talk about sexually harassment!  Sounds like he wants to have his way with her no matter what her protestations are.  The original score was written as a conversation between two people, marked as the “mouse” and the “wolf”.

Now, I know it’s just a song.  But think back to the day.  Picture Dean Martin circling a pretty girl at the bar, with his trademark cigarette and glass of whiskey, crooning this song.  The girl’s reputation was at stake, but not his, or any man’s for that matter.

Of course, today the young lady would probably be more than happy to stay, and not need any persuasion.  And just to add a little levity to the situation, here’s a Jimmy Fallon video about what happens when the lady DOES stay:

Timing is everything, cause some things never change.

My Bucket List

bucket list

To lay in the grass, covered by a litter of golden retriever puppies.

To meet Gavin DeGraw, and sing with him. Just me and him.

To go on a cruise, and eat and drink and dance the night away!

To play the piano with ease.

To be in a theatre play, and act and sing. Or maybe just the church choir!

To finally get my first book published, and continue to write another one, all my own.

To visit Alaska – see the glacier, Denali, and ride the train from Anchorage to Seward!  Go on a sled ride with the huskies.  Mush!

To visit Australia and New Zealand. I believe they have gorgeous landscapes.

To have a beer in Germany during Oktoberfest.

To visit Ireland and drink in the lush greenery.

To take my beloved great nieces and nephews to Disneyland and watch the wonderment on their little faces.

To swim again with the dolphins, this time in the wild, where you can frolic and play in their natural environment.

To make a difference in people’s lives in a positive way.  I love my seniors in swim class, and so many of them remind me of my dearly departed mom whom I miss so much!

Most importantly, going to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve with all the candles and beautiful voices rejoicing in the birth of Jesus, and then to wake up on Christmas morning snuggled up with a special loved one, having coffee in front of a crackling fireplace surrounded by the scent of a beautiful Christmas tree, with only a few meaningful gifts underneath.  Spending the rest of the day with beloved family and friends.

When my bucket list is complete, I will be ready to cross over to the Rainbow Bridge and be re-united with all my fur babies, who will then follow me into heaven to see my beloved family and friends who have passed before me.

What’s on YOUR bucket list?

Love Story Woven into Songs – REDUX

Lately the main search topics for my blog have to do with Gavin DeGraw.  I wrote this post last year after he came on my radar during DWTS.  I still crush on him, and hope to see him live in concert sometime.  Check him out my friends, he is the total package!

Adam Lambert – King of Guyliner – REDUX

Another oldie about one of my fav musicians.  Enjoy!

Adam Lambert did not win American Idol, and I know why.  First, a lot of people probably didn’t feel comfortable with his sexuality.  Even though he didn’t formally announce his gay orientation until after the show ended, a simple Google search would have shown you many pictures that were quite obvious in his choice.  Some that were borderline distasteful, and turned many people off, in that regard, including myself.  But that did not change my opinion of him as a singer.

Second, Kris Allen sang the right song at the right time in the competition.  While Adam Lambert totally KILLED every song he sang every week, Kris’s rendition of Kayne West’s Heartless blew every teenager away the last night of competition.  He was just so dang cute.  I knew immediately that night that Kris would ultimately win, even though Adam outsang him and outperformed him every week.  Adam was made for the stage.  He is very…theatrical.  His rendition of Mad World was one for the ages.  And one of my personal favorites was Ring of Fire.  Anybody that can make me like a Johnny Cash song has to be fabulous.  Every week was a new adventure on Idol, because of Adam.

The finale of American Idol was insane.  Adam Lambert as Freddy Mercury was off the hook.  He could have joined Queen or Kiss and never missed a beat.  He made Kris Allen look pathetic.  But by then the die was cast, and Kris Allen was already voted to be the American Idol.  And no one was more surprised than Kris.

Luckily for Adam, he was then free to record and go on tour after his committment to Idol was done.  Adam’s first album went gold.  His world tour was fabulous.  Let’s see, where was Kris Allen……

Adam Lambert has a once in a lifetime voice.  So does Lea Michele, from Glee.  I would love to have those two collaborate on a song or two.  It would be the ultimate duet!

Love Story Woven into Songs – REDUX

Another oldie, this one especially for my Gavin Girls, a group of fangirls that love Gavin DeGraw as much as I do!  If you know any of his songs, you will enjoy this story even more….

When did I become a little bit Country? I thought I was a little bit Rock and Roll!!

They’re everywhere it seems.  Country singers.  Hot country singers.  With cool songs.  Crossover songs.  Songs on the radio.  And not just on the country channel.

I blame it on American Idol and Carrie Underwood and Kelly Pickler.  The Voice and Blake Shelton.  Dancing with the Stars and Julianna Hough.  Nashville TV show and Connie Britton and Hayden Pantiere (who knew?).  Even my main man Gavin DeGraw has a bit of a twang and some of his songs could qualify for country.  It’s everywhere.

Country music has gone mainstream.  It’s not all about pickup trucks with gun racks and I lost my wife and dog but I still got this here bottle of Jack Daniels.  This is not your father’s music.  Love is still a central theme, but it is with all genre of music.  And the twang has been toned down.  It’s still there.  It’s still recognizable.  But it is definitely not a Patsy Cline or Johnny Cash kind of country anymore.  It’s a Taylor Swift world!

Seems like there are a LOT of fresh young beautiful female country singers.  I think this is one occupation where women rule!  My first “country” CD was Shania Twain, and I am glad she is back on the radar after some tough personal issues.  But I do love the country men tho.  Some of them are hot hot hot. Luke Bryan, Chuck Wicks, Keith Urban.  You get my drift.  But NOT Scotty McCreepy.  He reminds me of a scary clown mashup of  Howdy Doody and Alfred E. Neuman.  You be the judge, lol.

The CMA’s are this week, and will draw millions of viewers.  There will be spectacular performances by great singers.  Country singers.  Beautiful singers.  They might not even be wearing a cowboy hat and boots.  But it’s ok with me if they do.  Ain’t it cool?

Who is YOUR favorite country singer?

Fan or Fanatic?

Yes, I’m still a Gavin DeGraw fan.  He had himself quite a succesful tour this summer, to sold out venues all over the country.  I love his music and think he is a cool guy.  And yes, he follows me on twitter.  And have personal interaction there on occasion.  My own special Gavin twitter account, lol.  BUT.  I’m not running off after him any time soon.  Some of the girls that follow Gavin on twitter are really just too much.  Kinda of sad and funny at the same time.  And when they get too aggressive and he unfollows them?  OMG, they are heartbroken forever.  Seriously.  These are grown women.  MARRIED women.  Doesn’t matter.  They are totally obsessed with Gavin.  Hence, they are not just fans, they are fanatic.

I try to be realistic, and know that he isn’t pining away for me and writing songs about me and barely knows I exist.  His latest album “Sweeter” isn’t all love ballads, some songs really speak to the situation.  As a gifted songwriter, Gavin says it best himself:  “If you miss me, don’t. If I never wanna see you again I won’t. If you get an invitation I’m probably drunk. You’re just as hot as radiation. But I’m in this situation.  I only give in when I get the need.  I’m only coming around cause I get to leave and…”  Hello, booty call people.

He is a touring musician.  His rabid fans truly believe he is sweet and innocent and doesn’t have a girlfriend because he doesn’t have the time.  People, trust me.  He doesn’t buy the milk, cause he gets GALLONS of it every day for free!  Girls are throwing themselves at him at every turn.  Do a little digging and you can find out he prefers them young and blonde, and there is no dearth of them.

Now, he may be a man whore, but he is NOT a total cad.  He is very respectful and polite to ALL his fans, young and old alike.  He always has a ready smile, and will take a pic and sign an autograph for you.  His handlers have to drag him away, otherwise he would stay and hang out and talk for hours.

He puts on quite a show onstage, and does enough winking and pointing to make every girl feel special and singled out.  But there is always one held in reserve for later.  It is said he is very attentive to them til the deed is done, and then they are sent on their way.  And usually the “deed” is a one way street, if you get my drift.  But hey, there are plenty of girls out there who would consider it an honor and a privilege to service him.

I mean, come on, he travels on a bus with his band and crew.  They sleep in bunkbeds three high, with curtains.  Not sure how romantic you can get in there for long, lol.  Especially if the bus is on its way to the next tour stop.  Seems like the girl would be stranded at a new destination.  So the girl prolly never makes it to the bunk.  Unless she is a keeper, for at least a few stops, lol.

But it does amaze me what some of these fans think and do.  I am very enamored of him, and have quite a cougar crush on him.  But I am also realistic, and am content to admire him from afar.  These woman follow him around the country just to meet and greet him for 5 minutes for a photo op.  A very expensive photo op!  They stand in long lines to get the best seats.

But hey, whatever floats your boat.  Girls have been doing this for ever.  That’s what sells records, and makes a rock star.  He doesn’t seem to have any bad press following him around about it, so I guess the girl(s) slink away afterwards content for what little attention they received, but too embarrassed to tell the real story of what happened (or didn’t happen).

And he IS sensitive, if nothing else.  At least in his early days, as evidenced by MY personal favorite song of his, Glass.

“Fool you made the girl fall in love, you said those beautiful things, she thought you spoke things you mean

You breathe her air and you leave, you keep your mind on yourself, and lie the glass on the shelf

It wasn’t a lie but it wasn’t true, I just wanted to make you feel good, just wanted you near.  I wasn’t prepared, I wasn’t thinking of you, that you could actually love me, it never should have started.

But it was the kiss, it took me away, it’s like he knew that I am fragile, he handled me like glass

but I don’t want the man to suffer, oh not the way I am. Because deep down I know that he’s glass too

but it really doesn’t matter, until it’s happening to you . Everybody breaks. Everybody breaks sometimes”

Crash….the sound of glass breaking…or is that your heart?

Gavin DeGraw hangs up his dancing shoes….

Last night on Jimmy Kimmel, Gavin watched the traditional burning of his capezios.  A sad moment for us all.   He lasted five weeks, a lot longer than he probably thought initially.  I do think he accomplished his mission.  He learned a few dance steps, got to spend time with beautiful people, and put himself and his new album on people’s radar.  I myself never really was aware of WHO he was until DWTS.  Sure, I had heard his songs, but never associated a face to the music.  I think he will become more exposed to the public.  To me, going back in time and watching his early performances/videos, it is so endearing to see how Gavin has grown over the past 12 or 13 years or so since his videos first hit the net.

He was so soulful and vulnerable with his early songs, like Glass and Dancing Shoes.  His voice so pure, pouring his heart and soul into his songs over his piano.  He has said himself he really didn’t hit it big until he stopped caring about what other people thought of him and his music.  And truthfully, he LOOKED like he didn’t care.  In the beginning, he made the rounds of gigs and small towns, wearing a ball cap or beanie to tame his wavy locks and rumpled jeans and a t-shirt, not worry about his outward appearance.    Most of his early videos show him in rag-tag clothes.  I don’t think he ever really worried about dressing up.  Many videos show him on live TV show performances looking like he just rolled out of bed.  But the girls still screamed, lol,  Now he wears his self proclaimed “uniform” of tight black pants, vest and signature hat, sometimes a black leather jacket.

He has progressed into a man with charm and plenty of humor to abound, whether it’s showing off his hula hooping skills, or stories about his life.  He no longer just stays behind the piano or guitar, stepping up more into the spotlight as singer, altho he always returns to his piano at some point.  I think he is more playful now and banters with the crowd, more comfortable.  He knows his songs are good and he doesn’t have to worry about selling himself to the crowd anymore.  He just has to show up, and everybody’s happy.

Now he always wears a dress hat, and his hair is cut short.  No more wavy locks cascading down from his hat.  In fact, he looks like there would be no hair under his hat.  There is, but it HAS receded quite a bit since his younger days.  If he didn’t cut it so short, he would look like a regular guy.  I think the hat is his “stictk” now.  But I do wish he would let his hair grow a bit more, he looks funny to me with just a hat and no hair sticking out.

He’s from New York, but I think he has some country passion in his soul that gives him a bit of a twang in his voice.  His smile is very contagious, and he could charm the spots off a leopard.  He is very polite, always with the please and thank you.

I would imagine his tour bus has seen its share of groupies.  He does not appear to be a chaste type and am sure he enjoys his women.  Doesn’t seem to have had a lot of girlfriends, hard when you are touring all the time.   But I don’t think he ever lacks for female companionship.  However, I don’t think he likes a lot of PDA, and I rarely see him touch Karina in the way that most of the dancers do, always with their arms around each other, married or not, lol.  I think he likes his romance private.  Even tho he is a sexy man for sure!  I think not being so blatant about it adds to his allure.  His personality shines through first, and then his sultry sexiness.   I believe he would be a very passionate lover.  You can tell.  The hands.  The lips.  The moves.

His body is long and lean.  He is strong, but not muscle-bound.  He carried Melissa Gilbert down a flight of stairs like she was a feather.  I’ve seen his stomach and chest in a marine challenge video, he did pretty good!  Also, during his goodbye dance last night, he picked up Donald Driver and whirled him around several times WITH ONE ARM.  Impressed me, lol.

I don’t think he is romantically involved with Karina, although I am sure she is disappointed about that.  She was the one who recruited him, after all, after meeting him at an event.  However, there IS a romance going on at DWTS, and everybody thinks it is Katherine and Derek, but Katherine has tweeted that it is not them.  I have a sneaking suspicion that it is Gavin and Katherine.  I saw a pic of them taken together at #DWTS and they seemed very happily cozy together.  Hmmmm…..she’s a singer from Wales, he’s a singer from USA….not sure how often their paths would meet….so have fun for now.   That’s why I don’t think Gavin has a real girlfriend.  He tours constantly.  And after all this exposure on DWTS, I think he will be even more popular.

Sad to see him go, but glad he can concentrate more on his music and his tour now.  His performances will certainly be even more crowded now.  They’ve been adding dates to his tour almost weekly.  He certainly has renewed my interest in playing piano, and I am determined to practice more.  He has brought sexy back to piano!

So Gavin, I’m “Not Over You” yet, but sure enjoyed your mega-watt smile and humor and good grace every week.  I’m sure your tour will be even “Sweeter” now.  Good luck my friend, and hope to see you in concert some day.
